Book excerpt: What if today you were told you had only twenty-four hours to live? What would you do? The disease will begin to make you weak, and you won't be able to eat anything. People who have not seen you in a month won't know you. You won't be able to walk without a railing, a cane, a friend. I had the time left on the face of a clock. As the darkness deepened, my hope and my future was called into question. I had prepared to die. My question to you is this: With twenty-four hours left, and your sand running out, will you be ready for the darkness coming? It's coming, along with a sickness that tries men's souls. As the sand runs out, and all sound ceases to be, will you feel a hand grab yours, or will you be all alone in the darkness?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ donors are, by definition, altruists, and their act is even more generous when they remain anonymous. But altruism doesn't tell the whole story. There are myriad motivations, some subconscious, some conscious, that compel people to donate a part of themselves to someone they don't know. The Organ Donor Experience uncovers the desires, personalities and motivations of Good Samaritan organ donors and reveals much about the process of donating an organ to a needy recipient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Association of Fundraising Professionals 2014 Skystone Partners Research Prize in Philanthropy and Fundraising Traditionally, institutions have relied on wealthy White men to reach their fundraising goals. But as state investment in public higher education lessens and institutions look to philanthropy to move from excellence to eminence, advancement officers continually need to engage all populations, including many that have historically been excluded from fundraising strategies. Based on theory, research, and past practice, Expanding the Donor Base in Higher Education explores how colleges and universities can build culturally sensitive fundraising and engagement strategies. This edited book presents emerging research on different communities that have not traditionally been approached for fundraising—including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) alumni, African Americans, Latinos, graduate students, young alumni, women, and faculty donors. Chapters discuss and analyze successful programs and provide practical suggestions and strategies to create and implement fundraising programs that engage these new donor populations. Expanding the Donor Base in Higher Education is an essential resource for any institution looking to expand their pool of donors and cultivate a more philanthropic mindset among alumni and students.

Book excerpt: Judith Somers suffers from kidney failure and must undergo dialysis three times a week. She hates every minute of it. Then Bob, a coworker, eagerly offers to be her donor. What person in kidney failure wouldn’t be overjoyed to receive a kidney from a live donor? Gloria Robinson’s The Donor takes you through Judith’s quandary. She needs the kidney, but though Bob’s offer thrills her, it also makes her uncomfortable. After all, he’s not a friend, and she doesn’t know him very well. Is he just a good guy, or is there an underlying motive behind his seemingly selfless offer? If she accepts his offer, she can have her life back. She can travel again, without having to arrange for treatment in another city or state. If she turns down his offer, she’ll be tied to a dialysis machine for years until she reaches the top of the transplant waiting list. If she lives that long. The Donor takes you through a difficult decision and its aftermath. Like Judith, you’ll learn things are not always as they seem.

This book was released on 2007-04-22 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely understood that stem cell treatments have the potential to revolutionize medicine. Because of this potential, in 2004 California voters approved Proposition 71 to set up a 10-year, $3 billion program to fund research on stem cells. Under the direction of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, this program will pay to build facilities for stem cell research and will fund doctors and scientists to carry out research with the ultimate goal of helping to develop therapies based on stem cells. For this research to move forward, however, will require a steady supply of stem cells, particularly human embryonic stem cells. Those stem cells are collected from developing human embryos created from eggs-or oocytes-harvested from the ovaries of female donors. Thus much of the promise of stem cells depends on women choosing to donate oocytes to the research effort. The oocyte donation process is not without risk, however. Donors are given doses of hormones to trigger the production of more eggs than would normally be produced, and this hormone treatment can have various side effects. Once the eggs have matured in the ovary, they must be retrieved via a surgical procedure that is typically performed under anesthesia, and both the surgery and the anesthesia carry their own risks. Furthermore, given the very personal nature of egg donation, the experience may carry psychological risks for some women as well. With this in mind, in 2006 the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine contracted with the National Academies to organize a workshop that would bring together experts from various areas to speak about the potential risks of oocyte donation and to summarize what is known and what needs to be known about this topic. The Committee on Assessing the Medical Risks of Human Oocyte Donation for Stem Cell Research was formed to plan the workshop, which was held in San Francisco on September 28, 2006. This report is a summary and synthesis of that workshop.
