Book excerpt: 'Those interested in the nature of American nationalism will find much food for thought in this accomplished discussion of the way Southerners rejected their American identities during the Civil War and developed a sense of themselves as Confederates.'' Foreign Affairs Historians often assert that Confederate nationalism had its origins in pre-Civil War sectional conflict with the North, reached its apex at the start of the war, and then dropped off quickly after the end of hostilities. Anne Sarah Rubin argues instead that white Southerners did not actually begin to formulate a national identity until it became evident that the Confederacy was destined to fight a lengthy war against the Union. She also demonstrates that an attachment to a symbolic or sentimental Confederacy existed independent of the political Confederacy and was therefore able to persist well after the collapse of the Confederate state. White Southerners redefined symbols and figures of the failed state as emotional touchstones and political rallying points in the struggle to retain local (and racial) control, Rubin argues, even as former Confederates took the loyalty oath and applied for pardons in droves.

The author invites his readers to view the modern world through philosophical eyes as he relates Plato's words to issues such as friendship, human -rights, education, sexuality, bio-ethics and politics. Plato's words are quoted throughout the text; along with those of other thinkers such as Origen, Aquinas, King Charles I of England, Neitzche, Popper, Benedict XVI, and even Voldemort - the villain of the Harry Potter books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is clear from cross-national investigations that the concern with values education is universal, but that national approaches to the critical questions confronting value educators are extraordinarily diverse. This volume begins by examining the context of the revival of values education, and asks why it is gaining new impact in national and local educational systems. Chapter 2 helps to locate values education in its historical time and place. The case studies presented in Chapters 3-9 provide examples of the major variations in national practice in Asia and the West; and the concluding chapter identifies many of the options open to educational leaders. The aim of the book is to provide both practitioners and scholars with insights into the latest developments so that they can approach their work with broader vision and compassion.

Book excerpt: When tyrants come to power and Christians remain silent, the church betrays its prophetic role in the public sphere. Far from withdrawing from social-political engagement, Christians must grow in boldness as they embody a just, righteous, and godly love for their country and its people. In this collection of essays, Filipino evangelical theologians challenge the church’s complacency in the face of oppressive regimes. Addressing the specific realities of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, they draw on biblical studies, political theology, and ethics to provide a biblical and theological framework for Christians seeking to resist injustice in both the Philippines and beyond. Faith and Bayan is an excellent resource for students and leaders seeking an Asian evangelical perspective on Christian political engagement. It not only offers intellectual insight on the topic, but empowers its readers to fulfill a prophetic calling — to uphold democracy, peace, and human dignity.
