It’s one thing to pray for their brothers and sisters in Romania, though, and another thing entirely to face hostile border guards with illegal Bibles hidden in their van. Only God can blind the eyes of those searching the vehicle so the three of them will be allowed to pass through safely. Someone in the underground Romanian church is an informer, and the three Bible smugglers want to know who. The brutal dictatorship of Nicolae Ceau?escu, the watching eyes of the secret police, and a personal vendetta being carried out by a colonel with a forty-year grudge have put them and all the believers in danger. As rumors of revolution swirl around them, Jim, Nick, and Kirsten face an impossible dilemma. If they can’t trust those who call themselves Christians, who can they trust?

Book excerpt: It is 1802. The struggling seafaring town of Concarneau clings to the perilous Breton Coast of France and endures Napoleon's increasing taxes and tariffs. After a cholera epidemic devastates Concarneau's population and leaves the town without a healer, Captain Louis Bedard, master mariner and bereaved patriarch, decides to seek a medisin - a doctor - but how can he amass the year's advance salary necessary to pay such a man? Bedard resorts to smuggling and finds himself, for the first time, at odds with the local law. Each month on the dark of the new moon, he slips the wharf and sails under an alias. The work is dangerous; most times he and his crew barely avoid capture by Concarneau's ambitious Captain Peder LaMotte. Bedard's plan works until one stormy night when he is betrayed by a vengeful crewmember and arrested by LaMotte. While Bedard awaits trial in the town jail he thinks his life can get no worse, until his beloved only daughter visits and tells him that she has finally met the man she wants to marry.

Book excerpt: Marriage is under assault in most of the world. In the Western world the idea of God as Creator is largely scorned and rejected in intellectual circles. It is then logical for these intellectuals to attack marriage as well because marriage was the first institution that God created. It precedes any form of human government. Now we see some of the results of the assault on marriage. Children suffer. The cohesion of many marriages breaks down, whether there is a formal divorce or not. That means emotional stresses that human beings were not designed to handle. The very foundation of marriage, the attraction of one man to one woman, is under challenge. All of this is based on the assumption that either there is no Creator or that the Creator does not care what we do with His Creation. But what if both of these assumptions are wrong? What if the Creator pushes back at human challenge and disobedience? Is there a way back to joy and harmony between the Creator and humanity? There are then two alternatives: either we human beings repent and return to what the Creator instructed in the Bible, or devastating judgment from the Creator will follow. The Bible warns only too clearly that the judgment will in fact fall and that Jesus Christ will impose Gods rule with a rod of iron (Revelation 2:27, 19:15), although it gives no precise timetable. But judgment has not yet fallen in full, and there may be time for individuals, families and even nations to repent and join Gods family before all hope is gone. This book is intended to address practical issues and forgotten Scriptures in maintaining lifetime marriages and to help churches start to help marriages between men and women to stick together. It is designed either for individual or group study and discussion for teenagers and adults.
