Rather than a passing fancy or a device for drawing attention to the action that also permeates his work, boredom is central to the writings, the author argues. He contends that in Melville’s mature work, especially Moby Dick, boredom presents itself as an insidious presence in the lives of Melville’s characters, until it matures from being a mere killer of time into a killer of souls.

Book excerpt: Childhood friends Jimmy Lemond and Peter LeBlanc grow into adulthood during the tumultuous days of the Vietnam War. Like Herman Melville’s character, Bartleby, they both “prefer not to” take up arms, but they still can’t avoid turmoil. Jimmy is a student journalist who soon finds himself on the front lines of protests, where his fellow students not only demand an end to war but also the end of racism and segregation in their college community. Peter is still haunted by his father’s death on an ill-fated fishing trip. He joins the Mennonites in Vietnam as a peace worker. Through his relationship with a Thai woman he is introduced to the Mother Goddess ceremony and finds spiritual confirmation of his gender transformation. What an intriguing and unexpected tale Robitaille gives us. Bartleby’s Revenge kept me turning pages. The novel engages themes I care about a great deal, specifically those of peacemaking in response to war and of personality development through all the vicissitudes of social forces swirling around us. The story brought home for me in a renewed way the impact of the American War in Vietnam on individuals and families here in the US, particularly those with children facing the draft. For me as a Mennonite peacemaker, the draft was a welcome thing that midwifed me from a sheltered life here to years of peace work in Vietnam during the war, a path similar to that of one of the protagonist’s in the novel. —Earl Martin, author of Reaching the Other Side (1978), memoir of Mennonite peace work service in Vietnam I loved it. The pairing of Peter and Jimmy is a beautiful framework; their divergence and reunion are really engaging. They achieve a reconciliation without sentimentality, predictability, or compromise of their richly developed characters. —William C. Lineaweaver, MD, Editor in Chief, Annals of Plastic Surgery ... That a son of New Bedford imagines his life and the biography of his generation through the lens of Melville’s Bartleby is a moving exemplar of a mystory, testing in novel form Nietzsche’s insight, that life is the iron hand of necessity shaking the dice box of chance. —Gregory Ulmer, Professor of English, University of Florida and author of Teletheory and Internet Invention

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Aaron Hillyer considers the implications of Maurice Blanchot's strange formulation: "Literature is heading to its essence, which is its disappearance." This quest leads Hillyer to stage a dialogue between the works of Blanchot and Giorgio Agamben. Despite being primary points of reference for literary theory, no significant critical work has examined their "literary" writings together. The Disappearance of Literature initiates this new trajectory through readings of Blanchot's The Unavowable Community and Agamben's The Open, two short books that harbor their most enigmatic writings. A series of related concepts-study, community, mysticism, and friendship-emerges from this pairing, and, Hillyer argues, forms the basis of a new vein of contemporary literature found in the novels and hybrid fictions of Enrique Vila-Matas, Anne Carson, and Cesar Aira.

Book excerpt: For many children much of the time their experience in classrooms can be rather dull, and yet the world the school is supposed to initiate children into is full of wonder. This book offers a rich understanding of the nature and roles of wonder in general and provides multiple suggestions for to how to revive wonder in adults (teachers and curriculum makers) and how to keep it alive in children. Its aim is to show that adequate education needs to take seriously the task of evoking wonder about the content of the curriculum and to show how this can routinely be done in everyday classrooms. The authors do not wax flowery; they present strong arguments based on either research or precisely described experience, and demonstrate how this argument can be seen to work itself out in daily practice. The emphasis is not on ways of evoking wonder that might require virtuoso teaching, but rather on how wonder can be evoked about the everyday features of the math or science or social studies curriculum in regular classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman Melville is widely considered to be one of America's greatest authors, and countless literary theorists and critics have studied his life and work. However, political theorists have tended to avoid Melville, turning rather to such contemporaries as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau to understand the political thought of the American Renaissance. While Melville was not an activist in the traditional sense and his philosophy is notoriously difficult to categorize, his work is nevertheless deeply political in its own right. As editor Jason Frank notes in his introduction to A Political Companion to Herman Melville, Melville's writing "strikes a note of dissonance in the pre-established harmonies of the American political tradition." This unique volume explores Melville's politics by surveying the full range of his work -- from Typee (1846) to the posthumously published Billy Budd (1924). The contributors give historical context to Melville's writings and place him in conversation with political and theoretical debates, examining his relationship to transcendentalism and contemporary continental philosophy and addressing his work's relevance to topics such as nineteenth-century imperialism, twentieth-century legal theory, the anti-rent wars of the 1840s, and the civil rights movement. From these analyses emerges a new and challenging portrait of Melville as a political thinker of the first order, one that will establish his importance not only for nineteenth-century American political thought but also for political theory more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self, Ego, Subject these are the terms that philosophers have used to define that indelible mark of an individual. At the same time, however, a counter-current runs through the history of philosophy and culture that challenges the primordiality and privilege of the purportedly self-identical Subject. This collection of texts from 2012-2018 traces the history of disavowal, a line of escape from subjectivity. Breaking free of the binary logic of affirmation-negation, these essays contend that a third possibility exists in the realm of human action: disavowal. Disavowal is a sly sidestepping of boolean responses, an absolute negation that nevertheless posits an alternative course of action. Positing that a refusal to participate in the current global capitalist order need not be a refusal of the world as such this collection engages in topics from Cartesian subjectivity to Sia's live performance of "Chandelier," these essays provide a timely meditation on an urgent question and illuminate a path forward.

The history, the different forms and the consequences of this phenomenon are the main issues discussed in this volume. The contributions show that chaos and control are not mutually exclusive in the "contact zone" (Mary Louise Pratt); on the contrary, they stand in relation to each other - be it as a competence or as an interpretive scheme.

Book excerpt: A serious intellectual engagement with Afrofuturism and the philosophical questions of space and time Queer Times, Black Futures considers the promises and pitfalls of imagination, technology, futurity, and liberation as they have persisted in and through racial capitalism. Kara Keeling explores how the speculative fictions of cinema, music, and literature that center black existence provide scenarios wherein we might imagine alternative worlds, queer and otherwise. In doing so, Keeling offers a sustained meditation on contemporary investments in futurity, speculation, and technology, paying particular attention to their significance to queer and black freedom. Keeling reads selected works, such as Sun Ra’s 1972 film Space is the Place and and the 2005 film The Aggressives, to juxtapose the Afrofuturist tradition of speculative imagination with the similar “speculations” of corporate and financial institutions. In connecting a queer, cinematic reordering of time with the new possibilities technology offers, Keeling thinks with and through a vibrant conception of the imagination as a gateway to queer times and black futures, and the previously unimagined spaces that they can conjure.

This book was released on 2010-06-18 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clinical approaches to the chronic degenerative diseases that drain our resources, and compromise our well-being, have become almost exclusively symptom-focused. The common wisdom is that they are idiopathic with final outcomes to be managed rather than prevented or cured. That they are potentially reversible rarely enters into any discussion between doctor and patient. A Homeostatic approach to Cure and Prevention for Researchers and Clinicians Working in Toxicology, Immunology, Neurology, and Internal Medicine Reversibility of Chronic Degenerative Disease and Hypersensitivity, a four-part encyclopedia, offers a much different perspective on chronic degenerative disease, one that disputes the idiopathic label attached to most, as well as the usual fatalistic prognosis. The first volume, Regulating Mechanisms of Chemical Sensitivity, demonstrates that one aspect common to chronic diseases is the disruption of systemic and cellular homeostasis. Environmental pollutants play a large role, along with the contributions of genetic and life style factors, in disrupting the self-regulating mechanisms built into our normally adaptive cells. "As dyshomeostasis develops in the nervous system, causes should be found and removed before the metabolicinduced tissue changes take place and cause autonomous, irreversible fixednamed diseases to occur. ...Single and multiple chemicals in various doses either individually and/or in combinations can cause individual or multiorgan dysfunction of the endocrine system. The astute clinician must be aware of these factors in order to help the patient with hypersensitivity and/or chronic degenerative disease." Chapter 2 Drawing on a vast amount of data and clinical cases attended to by the authors in their own medical practices, this volume examines the complex relation that environmental pollution has with chronic degenerative diseases. It considers its impact on the body’s vast communication networks and what excessive overload does to homeostatic mechanisms. The authors factor in both general and specific environmental loads and how they alter and trigger genetic and non-genetic responses. Volume 1 begins with an overview of the physiologic basis of homeostasis, exploring various ways that the body deals with toxins and the networks it uses to communicate news of assault and makes provisions for adaptation. The text delves into the connective tissue matrix and considers vascular, neural, endocrine, and immune system responses to a variety of noxious assaults. "Both innate and acquired immunity can be and are altered in individuals with chemical sensitivity and chronic degenerative disease. ...With pollutant overload changes can occur in the lymphatic channels, the lymph nodes, and lymph node egress as well as the lymphatic cells. Changes in mucosal function and the effects of the autonomic nervous system are evident with environmental pollutant overload." Chapter 3 Written by two very knowledgeable clinicians, it brings together research of the highest caliber and provides extensive discussions involving sophisticated biochemical, endocrine, and neural science. The text provides clinicians with the knowledge to understand the triggering and processes of degenerative diseases, so that they might develop more efficient treatment and prevention plans. The book also supplies the knowledge and perspective that can lead research to more effective treatments. "The ground regulation system consisting of the connective tissue matrix, fibroblast, macrophages, mast cell, leukocyte, end capillary vessel and autonomic nerves, is a global information system for regulating the dynamics of homeostasis in the body. ...One’s knowledge of this process must be the guide to move through the onset of early end-stage disease and, eventually, see the manifestations to fixed-named autonomous diseases. It is this knowledge that offers us the greatest potential ... for preventing and reversing early homeostatic dysfunction." Chapter 1
