Book excerpt: Baby SEALs Part 1 is the first in a series of seven books that follows the lives of two children, Jeff and Danielle, who meet when they are six years old and decide they are brother and sister. Part 1 describes their lives from the time they meet until they are twelve. Danielle lives with her mother and stepfather, while Jeff lives with his mother. To say the least, none of these parents are great role models. When Jeff and Danielle are seven, they are terribly injured; and when they are released from the hospital, they are taken under the wing of an ex-Navy SEAL and members of his team who spend the next several years teaching them everything a SEAL knows, from scuba diving to weapons, unarmed combat, parachuting, combat medic, and even explosives. At their core, Jeff writes music, while Danielle is an artist and plays the guitar. All the new training is laid on top of this. Although they become Christians together early on, their faith takes a major blow when they are injured, and they spend a long time regaining their faith. Through it all, their friends, new ones and old ones, Christian and non-Christian, give them support and encouragement. Also through it all is how Gods hand in their lives is obvious to anyone who can see what is taking place and how all the pieces fit together.

Book excerpt: Jeff and Danielle spend their senior year in high school in Australia, leaving all their worries in the US behind. Right? Apparently not—Australia is keeping them as active as all their years at home. Adjusting to a new school system proves easier than expected, but unanticipated challenges arise. The movie they have planned needs much care and consultation and takes a surprising turn. And trouble has followed them across half the world and rears its head in unexpected ways. On the good side, Danielle has a boyfriend, her first. And Jeff has a girlfriend, not his first, but perhaps his next love. So many questions are answered, but others, big ones, appear on the horizon. On such a huge continent, how can the distances be conquered? Has Jeff found his forever love? Will the true story of Jeff and Danielle’s relationship come out? What about their pilot certificates? And the movie they want to make? University decisions loom . . . And is crime boss Owen getting involved in their lives too much—way too much?

Book excerpt: 'Think globally, act locally' has become a call to environmentalist mobilization, proposing a closer connection between global concerns, local issues and individual responsibility. A History of Environmentalism explores this dialectic relationship, with ten contributors from a range of disciplines providing a history of environmentalism which frames global themes and narrates local stories. Each of the chapters in this volume addresses specific struggles in the history of environmental movements, for example over national parks, species protection, forests, waste, contamination, nuclear energy and expropriation. A diverse range of environments and environmental actors are covered, including the communities in the Amazonian Forest, the antelope in Tibet, atomic power plants in Europe and oil and politics in the Niger Delta. The chapters demonstrate how these conflicts make visible the intricate connections between local and global, the body and the environment, and power and nature. A History of Environmentalism tells us much about transformations of cultural perceptions and ways of production and consuming, as well as ecological and social changes. More than offering an exhaustive picture of the entire environmentalist movement, A History of Environmentalism highlights the importance of the experience of environmentalism within local communities. It offers a worldwide and polyphonic perspective, making it key reading for students and scholars of global and environmental history and political ecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patriots or anarchist? Jeff (19) and Ann (18) were graduates of the Castleway Academy. Each swore their allegiance to the United States and the principles set forth in the Bill of Rights. They dedicated their lives, and the resources of the Academy, towards preserving democracy and protecting the individual rights guaranteed to all citizens under the U.S. Constitution. Americans were apathetic and permitted the government to compromise guaranteed rights by allowing the government, in the name of Homeland Security, to erode such simple things as privacy, gun rights, speech and assembly all for the greater good of the ruling political elite under the auspices of national security. Jeff and Ann create a random encryption interface which reencrypted data every second preventing unlawful spying by the NSA and drones. To awaken Americans, Jeff and Ann produced historically accurate video programs covering the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. As citizens awakened, the political elite became the targets of questions and demands that individual rights be restored and the Constitution followed. The government, through Homeland Security retaliated and arrested Jeff as a domestic terrorist for producing the educational videos that enticed social disobedience in the name of liberty and freedom. The battle for liberty was reborn. New Beginnings is the first book in a trilogy that addresses government overreach, lack of transparency and the desire to stop fourth amendment violations by disabling drones and shutting down the NSA data collector.

Book excerpt: Theodicy (n)-a justification of human suffering in light of the supposed existence of an all-powerful and loving God. So, This Baby Seal Walks Into A Club... takes place in a rehab where those that avoided reality through drugs are now expected to dodge it through religion and self-help platitudes. It's a book about junkies, crackheads and losers. It's about those human monsters you double bolt your door against, and how they're just as scared as the rest of us. It's about how a Loving God stuck us down here with death, disease, despair and then expected our thanks. So This Baby Seal Walks Into A Club...is a theodicy for a post-theistic age where only the retarded believe in God. Hope you like your humor black.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting new text traces the common themes in the long and complex history of mass communication. It shows how the means of communicating grew out of their eras, how they developed, how they influenced the societies of those eras, and how they have continued to exert their influence upon subsequent generations. The book is divided into six periods which are identified as 'Information Revolutions' writing, printing, mass media, entertainment, the 'toolshed' (which we call 'home' now), and the Information Highway. In looking at the ways in which the tools of communication have influenced and been influenced by social change, A History of Mass Communication provides students of media and journalism with a strong sense of the way their chosen field affects how society functions. Providing a broad-based approach to media history, Dr. Fang encourages the reader to take a careful look at where our culture is headed through the tools we use to communicate with one another. A History of Mass Communication is not only the most current text on communication history, but also an invaluable resource for anyone interested in how methods of communication affect society.
